What is best for a complete novice.

Hi everyone! I’m from Kent and have never flown a drone before. In my late 60s, I’m a paraplegic wheelchair user following an RTA in 1995, but I’m still very independent and able to drive. For the past eight years, I’ve been volunteering at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham, assisting researchers, and I really enjoy spending two days there each week. I’m interested in starting with a beginner drone and possibly upgrading if I get into it. Does anyone have advice on what model to choose as a complete novice?

Hello and Welcome to drone Hub @Malc58

Have you had a look at the post called “What 1st drone for new user” it is in the General category on drone hub you may find some information on there that may be useful for you for a first drone.

Again welcome to the community :+1:

Hi, welcome to the forum!
Sounds like you would really enjoy flying. Chatham looks to have some great fly spots - personally I’d love to do some filming in the Medway esturay with its little islands.
Are you looking for advice on getting an FPV drone or a DJI (other brands available) camera drone?

Hi DroneDad, I haven’t looked in that category, but I will now, thanks for replying.

Hi GVG_Air, thanks for the welcome! Yes, there are plenty of interesting areas in the Medway towns. I’m not sure what an FPV drone or DJI drone is, but I’d like one that can film the flight and is reasonably priced. I’ve seen some where you attach your phone to the controller. I’m not very tech-savvy, so I’m not sure what kind I should buy.

Hi Mark & welcome. you need to ask yourself why do you want a drone first ??. is it you just like flying, what do you want to fly & why. You may benefit from joining a flying club near you, Seeing all the different planes helicoptors drones. By joining the club you would get advice on safety & how to fly all above. Getting the safety no ledge is very important & can save you a few bob. you could just join the club just for one year then go alone with all the knoladge. If however you have made your mind up its a Drone, Well then do you just want a drone or a drone that has a camera. if its photography you like, most dji drones take good shots of corse the more you pay the better you get. I would suggest dji mini 3 or 4 to start with. the flying restrictions are much limited. get the bigger one you need a lot more knowledge & certificates. Hope this helps.

FPV drones are fully manual. You have to learn how to takeoff, land and avoid crashes by yourself.
Camera drones, mostly by DJI, are probably what you are looking for. Most of the complications of flying are taken care of.
You can take stills and video.
Everything you need to fly is usually included.

Have a look at the DJI website.
Also look at some of the photos on videos posted in this group - they usually say which drone they’re taken with.
I think the most popular starting drone is the DJI Mini Pro series, especially Min3Pro and Mini4Pro.
