I have been thinking about the proposed DJI ban in the US and I think I have a solution for our US cousins. The legislation considers only the import of DJI product for sale, my solution is that a third party, in another country “leases” dji drones to customers in the US, who is with me ?
I think you need to talk to a very good (and likely very expensive) specialist US lawyer first. Intriguing idea but wouldn’t be suprised whether legal or not, if it stopped you visiting the US, possibly forever.
Anzu drones has licensed DJI’s technology. They build identical drones, but with green plastic instead of grey, in a factory in Malaysia.
They use a non-DJI firmware, which ostensibly does not contact DJI’s servers in China. (Although, someone tested this with a packet sniffer and it was actually found to contact DJI’s servers. Perhaps that has now been rectified).
DJI also appears to be selling its drones under a different brand name - Specta. Also, made in Malaysia. (I would be willing to bet it is the same factory as the Anzu branded drones).
These other drones are identical, but with the Specta name on them and in the firmware, UI, etc.
They have separate FCC filings and, in theory, aren’t made in China so they side-step the ban.
