Risk Assesments?

Am I required to carry risk assesments and fill one out every time I fly?

@Pondlife Yes, but you can use the same template and save as a new RA

Is risk assessment a legal requirement or just good practice? Commercial flying needs one, recreational seems to be good practice.

so who has the right to ask me if I have one? I wonder if Joe Public even knows they are required

@Pondlife Lets just imagine the Police stop you because some one reported suspicious activity, you tell them that you’re flying under article 16 they check what that is and then ask about your risk assessment?

Article 16 states you need to do a risk assessment so my advice is always do one.

Or lets suppose a worse case scenario you crash your drone into a property or person, or another aircraft, you need to report said accident, what did your risk assessment show before you started flying?

At the end of the day it’s being a responsible flyer and assessing the area you’re flying in & around should be done.

Of course I understand all that and I will carry out due dilligence.I just wondered who can demand to see my credentials apart from Plod obviously

Marcus Article 16 clearly states : Whilst it is not a legal requirement (unless the proposed flying area is within a built-up area),

a risk assessment is an excellent way to consider the suitability of a flying location in a

structured way. A risk assessment is perfectly simple and straightforward - members

shouldn’t be put off by the prospect of completing one.

So not actually required. Clubs in built up areas must do a risk assessment for their members.
Good practice but not legally required
Perhaps Simon can clarify.

I must admit to being a bit of a stickler for rules and generally go for a belt and braces approach so I will be doing one no matter where I fly, even though I don’t intend to do much flying in a built up area,I mean, who would want to take photographs or video of a load of houses when there’s so much beautiful countryside around? As Marcus says,it’s best practice so you might as well get into the habit.
