Restricted area’s to fly

Hi all

I’m relatively new to the world of drones and have a Question about restricted area’s to fly?
I live next to an airport that closed down in 2022, but the area still has a restriction on the map, there is a proposal for the airport to reopen possibly in 2028, I was wondering who I have to contact (CAA) to get permission to fly my drone, I basically want to do some videos as I have some great scenery walks where I live and wanted to get some video created before it reopens, any advice would be most welcome

Sounds like Sheffield Doncaster (former RAF Finningley). There are no restrictions around it, as far as I know. What are you referring to?

I forgot to say: welcome to DroneHub @shrek! It’s really great to have you with us.

Hi Simon, thanks for the reply, yes your correct I’m referring to Sheffield Doncaster airport, it’s just showing on my Dji fly app that there are restrictions, as a radius of 5Km, I just wanted to make sure I was able to fly my drone in this area

Your DJI app is out of date. How old is your drone?

Your profile says you fly a Mini 5 Pro. I’m really surprised that model has an out of date map on it.

Can you update its database somehow?

Have you done all the software and firmware updates from DJI?

Hi Simon

The drone is just over a week old, yes I’m flying the new mini 5 pro, I’ve also got a Dji Mavic Air,

All updates were done once I received the new drone, I will have a look and see if I can force another firmware update,

But I’m happy I’m able to fly the drone in my area although it will be for a short time,

Thank you so much for the information I’m so looking forward to show off the area and scenery where I live

I will update you if it works

Once I activated the drone the mini 5 pro wasn’t on the list to start with

DJI Geozones don’t prevent you flying any more. They are just for information.

It is a real shame that the information is so out of date though.

I went on the Dji website and it’s the same, yes your right it is a shame,

Do you know of any apps that I could used for upto date flight zone restrictions please :folded_hands:

Many thanks

Yes. Use DroneSafetyMap.com on your PC and Drone Assist app on your phone.

Both mentioned in our handbook at handbook.fpv.uk

Both of those use data from Altitude Angel which is reliable.

I always check the Drone Assist app. It’s free and the best.

Agreed. It is a shame today Altitude Angel has entered administration.

@Shrek You can reach out to NATS regarding any questions about the former FRZ at Doncaster Sheffield (and/or Nottingham Tollerton). Their email is aissupervisor@nats.co.uk and I’m told they’re quick to respond.
