I’m just getting back into the hobby after quite some time. I remember being challenged by members of the public regarding the legality of my flights in local parks and want to avoid such confrontations in future.
I’m thinking of creating two A5 cards, one for the member of the public challenging me, and one for the police i.e. if they don’t stop:
FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
Hi there. Just to let you know, I’m flying this drone legally under an Article 16 Operational Authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority, which allows me to fly here in accordance with specific safety procedures. I am required to maintain visual line-of-sight with the drone at all times, and any distraction - like extended conversation - can affect flight safety. I’m happy to answer questions once the drone is safely on the ground, but for now I need to concentrate on flying safely. Thank you for your understanding.
FOR THE POLICE
Hello officer. I’m operating a drone under a valid Article 16 Operational Authorisation issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (UAS 13529). I am flying in a public place, in full compliance with the conditions of that authorisation. A member of the public is currently distracting or confronting me in a way that is impacting my ability to maintain visual line-of-sight and operate safely. I have asked them to allow me to focus on the flight, but they have continued. Their actions are now interfering with the safe conduct of a regulated activity, and I am concerned this could present a risk to public safety or constitute harassment. I would appreciate your assistance in resolving the situation so I can complete my operation safely.
I’m thinking that I can produce these as required is order to:
- Be polite and professional, but assertive in regards to my right to fly.
- Maintain safe flight operations.
What are your thoughts?
