Red Kite inspects my DJI Mini 5 Pro

Following Storm Chandra and the extensive flooding we’ve had in the south west, I thought I’d dig out the Mini 5 Pro and take some photos / videos.

But I was somewhat distracted by a red hawk that seemed to be taking an unhealthy interest in my drone. At one stage, I was worried I might lose it…

Cool shots, however the bird is either feeling under threat or looking to you as dinner, I seen a few people say adding red reflective tape as much as possible deturs birds attention. Ive ordered some to give it a go, although the shots of a bird taking out my drone and back to a perch would be almost worth it.

I’ve since read that “googly eyes” on the front / top of the drone also scare them off..

I have been plagued by birds in my area, gulls mostly swap around my mini 4 pro. I usually climb immediately as birds can’t follow, they need to go around climbing as they go. so I did some research and came cross the red reflective tape. Worth a go. put some on my drone, what a difference. Same gulls in same area, came out for a look, one circuit and then they left. Impressed. I do try and keep away from trees and their habitat. aparantly the larger raptors are not put off as such.

Nice images and great video @BSABoatCar :+1:

Nice photos, we have red kites in the Highlands but haven’t flown near them yet, didn’t want to risk upsetting them but will give it a try

Hi
It’s good to be with you. I looked at various clubs and picked FPVUK as it looked to be the best. I’ve found it helpful and friendly and very professional, the CAA updates have been great.
I fly a Red 5 Raptor purchased from the Menkind store in Aberdeen.
I’ve flown several times across the field at the back of my house but due to the weather I’ve yet to venture out. I’m looking forward to better weather so I can get out and about in the Highlands and fly my drone properly.

Fabulous how special

Thanks for the positive comments. And just to be clear, I didn’t go looking for red kites to film; I was filming the floods and the kite found me. I made the mistake of putting up the same photos on one of the more popular FB UK Drone Groups and while 97% of the participants liked them, the other 3% accused me of breaking every rule in the book — I happen to live in place where red kites have made a spectacular recovery in the last 10 years, and they are, literally, everywhere — needless to say, I left that Group and will not be returning
