Hi All,
My interest in drones only started recently, around last year. I was trying to build a robot and needed a way to transport the AI component, so I thought a flying robot would be a cool direction to explore.
Since then, I have continued working on the idea and have now managed to get an F450 prototype ready for its first flight. I have also started learning about drone regulations and training in a simulator.
I have found flying more challenging than I expected, and I quickly realised how easy it is to damage or break a drone. I am learning and enjoying the process and looking forward to improving my skills.

Good Evening and welcome to the fray!
Hi,
Welcome!
Sounds like you have an interesting project going on. Care to elaborate?
Thanks,
I’m currently working on a drone project based around an F450-style quadcopter frame. The first part of the project is the airframe itself. At the moment, it is a fairly standard prototype build, but I would like to redesign it so it can carry more onboard components while still remaining practical to fly. One of my other goals is to design/adapt existing model and 3D print a proper 360-degree propeller protection system.
The second part of the project is the onboard “brain.” I have already done object detection using a YOLOv8 model and generated video with detection overlays. The next step would be to integrate this more directly into the drone setup, using hardware such as an Orin Nano, and then send the video feed with overlays to the FPV goggles.
Longer term, I would like to investigate pilot-assist features. For example, if the drone detects an immediate obstacle or danger, it could help adjust its trajectory, a bit like driver-assistance systems in cars.
Another feature I would like to investigate is a “follow pilot” mode, activated only when commanded. The idea would be to use a combination of LiDAR and some form of tag or marker detection so the drone can track and follow the pilot more reliably.

Welcome to the forum. An interesting project…
Sounds like a wonderful project. I worked on something similar for a client a few years back.
I hope it all goes to plan.
