After my plans to fly around Glastonbury Tor were scuppered,I got to thinking about Stonehenge.Apparently the site is managed by English Heritage who don’t seem to be as anal as the National Trust about drones and although they don’t allow TOAL from their property and they discourage overflight,they won’t stop it as long as you adhere to the drone code and don’t act like an idiot.So far so good I thought and then went to check the drone map where I find Stonhenge is in an area of high intensity radio transmission.What does this mean please? I would have thought there was an increased risk of interference to the drone and controller am I right and is it unadvisable to fly there?

I know that area very well. Salisbury Plain is a huge military area with lots of activity, as you may be aware. Looking at The Drone Map, half of Stonehenge itself appears to be in a red restricted area. The other half is a cautious yellow area as you correctly have noted. Even if English Heritage gave you permission to overfly you could only travel around half of it! There are public right of way access in the area to take off and land but keep an eye out for the red area.

I did notice the Larkhill danger area but I though it would be highly unlikely (you’d hope anyway) there wouldn’t be any live firing or other military activity so close to such a sensitive area especially with members of the public all over it,they’ve been talking for years about puttinga tunnel through there to keep cars away!.Oh well,I think I’ll give it a miss

I can’t see that tunnel ever being built, it would be such a waste of money to just give visitors “a view without seeing the A303”. They’d be better off spending the money filling in potholes and making the A303 bottleneck around there into two lanes! But that would mean a compulsory purchase order of the adjacent land …. que political debate

Because I’m old, I remember Stonehenge before it was fenced off so English heritage could make money out of it. It belongs to everyone, not the money grabbers.
