Hi from Buckinghamshire

Hi, I relatively new here. I joined a month or so ago after buying the new DJI Mini Pro 5. I’ve done all the legal stuff (OID and FID etc) but yet to actually fly it. (The weather hasn’t been kind to me). As a consequence I’ve been doing a lot of forum scrolling. Needless to say the one subject that has caught my attention is the weight controversy of my drone. Though having talked to DJI, they assure me that there will be a solution available for us once the CAA officially start using the UK mark. Till then I’m reluctant to take the thing out incase I inadvertently break the rules. However, looking at the forcast, there maybe opportunities to get out and fly it. Are there any members in the Aylesbury area who would like to take on a newby?

Welcome to the forum, plenty of helpfull and friendly people here am sure will answer on technicalities.

As far as i am aware the 5 pro with it’s C0 marking will be fully incorporated into UK law from the 1st Jan 26

People with more knowledge than me might like to comment on the current legislative state, till the end of the year, with many of them being a couple of grams over 250.

Hello and welcome to drone Hub :waving_hand: I am aslo thinking of purchasing the DJI mini 5 pro hopefully if there are any black friday deals :victory_hand::wink::+1: The current law will change from 01/01/2026 here is a screenshot of the rules and drone classification marks.

I hope the weather improves for you and you manage to get some flight time. Ps A useful app to get to check to see if you are allowed to fly in is Drone Assist and i highly recommend you using this app above all obey the rules and you should be fine.

@DroneDad, Thanks for that, but I was already aware of the new rules. It seems the devil is in the detail and from 01/01/2026 the Mini 5 Pro bearing a C0 mark is legal as a C0. As the CAA drone guide says under 250g or C0 or UK0 can fly in the A1 Open category. What still troubles me, and I guess a lot of other C0 drone owners, is will the CAA continue that distinction into 2028 as currently, my Mini 5 Pro would become a legacy drone and as it’s 2 or 3g over 249.9g then I would be forced to fly it in A3 Open Category only. I am hearing from some source that it is unlikely that the CAA will allow a situation to develop where a drone is legal to fly in A1 open on 31st December 2027 and illegal on 1st Jan 2028.

The manufacturer (DJI) can self-certify that the Mini 5 Pro is a UK0 drone, based on the fact it is a C0 drone, and the requirements are identical.

So, they can then UK0 mark it. Which means there will be no 31/12/2027 cliff edge.

@SimonDale Thanks for responding. Until very recently, DJI were offering a C0->C1 reclassification. That seems to have been removed. I spoke to DJI UK Support and I asked if C0 drones bought before Jan 1st 2026 with a C0 classification could be reclassified as UK0. The answer was “not at this time and highly unlikely in the furfure”. Which leads me to believe that unless the CAA explicitly say in the drone code that post 2027 C0 drones will be regarded as UK0 then C0 drone will fall into legacy governed by weight.. True, if I have a need to replace my drone via DJI Care within the two year then hopefully a replacement may well bear a UK0 classification. But that remains to be seen as at the moment te CAA are still saying that the primary criteria that UK0 is based on is sub 250g and not with the EASA +/-n%.

FYI my information is from the CAA class marking project leader. She gave a presentation on the subject at a recent NPCC meeting that I attended.

It would seem crazy for DJI not to take the CAA up on its offer to self-certify its C0 and C1 drones as UK0 and UK1 drones. However, it is certainly possible… Perhaps there are commercial reasons (such as encouraging people to buy the latest model).

One would think the Mini 5 Pro would be safe, given it is a current model. Once they have self-certified the model, and issued their certificate of compliance, you would think that would include all such drones.

It may just be a question of sticking a UK0 sticker to it.

If those don’t become available on eBay or AliExpress I’ll be amazed…I may even get some printed myself!

Thank you for your considered reply. That’s quite encouraging. It was nearly a month ago I was in conversation with DJI. So what I was told may well have changed.
