I’m not qualified to give legal advice, so please don’t take this as such.
From what you said, it sounds like you are flying your drone lawfully. It is sub-250g, and you are registered with the CAA (and covered by insurance too).
The other drone would appear to be flying in contravention of the rules (because it is not below the 250g threshold).
Also, Article 241 of the Air Navigation Order 2016 is relevant here:
241. A person must not recklessly or negligently cause or permit an aircraft to endanger any person or property.
It sounds like the other person caused his aircraft to endanger your property.
You could make him aware of this. And/or you could report it to the Police.
I’d also look at weather or not it could be reported as a near miss?
You could report it to the UK Airprox Board as an Airprox I suppose.
They have zero enforcement powers, and very limited investigative powers, so they won’t be able to trace or talk to the other party. Therefore they will publish your report verbatim, in their release in a few months time.
Then the Daily Mail will pick that up and it’ll be in the papers.
I’m not sure that is necessarily beneficial to anyone involved?
It is a good thought though. You could report it to the CAA as an MOR. That is confidential and they do have investigative and enforcement powers.
According to the website:
What to report
You must report any occurrence that:
Endangers an aircraft, its occupants, or any other person.
That’s not a bad idea at all.
How to report an MOR is here: Occurrence reporting | UK Civil Aviation Authority
I have reported it to the caa with video footage.
But can i fly my drone from my back yard?
To answer your back yard question we’d need to know if its in a Flight Restriction Zone or not? If the answer is no, then you can.
Would you say it was intentional or did the other pilot lose control of their craft?
I think it’s unlikely that it was intentional as there is a genuine risk of downing both drones.
It sounds like you know the person but don’t want to name them.
If your drone was damaged, I would take the example of road accidents. Approach the pilot and politely ask to exchange insurance details.
If they decline and you have some evidence (like footage from your drone) you could then go to the police.
I avoid these situations by landing as soon as I see another drone in adjacent airspace, and moving somewhere else.
Should I feel a responsibility to police other flyers? Perhaps that’s better for the future of the hobby. But knowing the personal risk involved, I don’t.
Having said that, I have been assaulted in the past year for trying to intervene when a road rage incident started to escalate near my house.

Yeah, I agree. I don’t think there is much to be gained from trying to tell someone the rules when they’re flying. I wouldn’t.
If I understood the OP correctly, this person intentionally flew their (250g+) drone close to his. Which is all kinds of wrong.
