Flying in Edinburgh

Greetings friends. I’m an American visiting Scotland for the next few days. I’ve got my A2 and insurance via FPV UK. I wanted to fly in Edinburgh but, looking at the Drone Map, it appears the area around Calton Hill is in a sizable CTR.

Does that mean no recreational flying without prior authorization? Is that granted on an instantaneous basis (like many LAANC requests from the US) or is it more complicated? Your collective knowledge and experience is greatly appreciated.

Feel free to offer tips on flying Glasgow as well. I’m visiting there before heading to the Highlands.

Good Morning @RonaldJHansen & welcome to the forum and the UK…

Firstly, as you don’t mention them I’ll start there - You will need UK Flyer ID and OP ID depending on what you are flying. You can get both online - check out CAA web site

More to follow…

EDIT: With your FPV membership you get access to TheDroneMap.com, this shows where we can fly and various restriction zones. I can’t see any on or around Calton Hill

I’m sure some local members will update/correct me if I’ve missed something…

Hope this helps.

PS check TheDroneMap.com for Glasgow too…

Have fun and stay safe
