Hi. Welcome from South Tyneside. My wife & I are paying a visit to Falkirk tomorrow for a short break. Looking to get some video of the Wheel & possibly Stirling Castle. I can’t commit to any times but interested to know if you have any recommendations for legal TOAL sites to get some footage of the castle?
That wheel truly is an impressive bit of engineering,it’s on my list for places to visit.
Yes indeed. Scottish Canals appear ti be drone friendly with advisories on TOALs, They don’t want you flying above the wheel & prefer midweek sorties due to busy weekend tourism.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES) appears to have more ‘clout’ than NT re: Stirling Castle. Still waiting for details on TOALs but what I have learned, so far, is their signage makes reference to Police Scotland. Will let you know if I find out anything interesting (from the comfort of a police cell, maybe? lol).
Not sure how high that hill Stirling Castle sits on is,if you have to TOAL off the hill, you may well fall foul of maximum height regs
According to Britannica.com, Stirling Castle stands 250 feet (75 m) higher than the surrounding terrain on the flat top of an ancient extinct volcano and commanding excellent views in every direction.
I didn’t fly at Stirling as I didn’t get a response from Stirling Council on TOALs so didn’t risk it.
However, the reception I got at The Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel was excellent. At both venues I approached staff in the visitors centres about protocol re: flying drones. Very positive & friendly. I was asked to produce my Flyers ID & to abide by CAA code. I was even advised of hazards that could damage my drone (pylons, cables, adverse wind conditions caused by the ‘attractions’). I was even thanked for asking for permission to fly - seriously.
In conversation with the receptionist at the Falkirk Wheel she said the attitude towards drones was more relaxed because of legislation, registration with CAA, the Code and the organisations (eg FPVUK) being set up to promote considerate & responsible flying, education etc.
This was an enjoyable experience with some nice video & photos.
Good bit of info,thanks ![]()
I’m heading up that way in september with the wobbly box and er indoors, hoping to get some good flying time in
I’m not that far from Falkirk, but new to flying drones. I’d be up for joining in a flying session.
