Elan Valley flying permission

The Elan Valley website states that the area is strictly regulated by Dŵr Cymru (Welsh Water) who owns the land and reservoirs. It also states that “Drones are not permitted to fly over any of their locations at any time without prior consent”. They publish an email address to contact the Welsh Water press office ( press@dwrcymru.com ) to request permission to fly.

I emailed them for details but, to date, have had no reply. I was talking to someone recently who said he hadn’t had a reply either.

Has anyone flown in the Elan Valley and if you got permission, do you have a contact email? At this stage I was just after more details and wanted to know about the flexibility about time scales etc. For instance I hope it’s not one of those “between 10-11 on a specific day” etc

I appreciate that I could contact the Elan Valley directly but I was interested to see if anyone here had flown there and what their experience was.

The Elan Valley policy can only be applicable if you fly from within their owned and private land, They do not own the airspace above and that’s controlled by the CAA. So as long as you take off and land from publicly accesible land, roadsides etc and there are no flight restrictions ( Check drone map) you don’t need anyones permisison to fly over the valley as long as you remain within the CAA rules.

I frequently fly over land that they claim to own, but usually launch from the public road. I’ve generally steered clear of the dams themselves (they’ve been drained a lot during recent times); I have taken so many still photos of them and I’m using the valley itself for self-tuition/ experience.
