Benefits of Landing Mats

So here we go my first question!
While researching the drone I was going to buy i watched alot of videos on the drones on the market, what i noticed was a lot people who used landing mats.
Now im not sure if this question has been asked but what is the benifit of using a landing mat compared to a flat surface? TIA for your reply.

They can provide a clean surface to land and take off from. I used mine today, the ground was very dry and dusty as we’ve had no rain for weeks and the mat helps reduce blowing dust and debris into delicate areas. Also if you are taking off from grass, it again provides a flat surface and stops you blades hitting the grass and potentially getting tangled.

I use this one, it folds flat and is heavy enough to not require pegs. Main reason I use one is a lot of dirt, fine grit and dust can get kicked up taking off and landing. Don’t want that getting into the motors and other moveable parts !

Mat stops it …

One I use:

I bought a landing mat in a fit of enthusiasm when I first started drone flying but rarely use it these days. I find it heavy to carry around. If there is a handy clean flat surface available I may use it but nine times out of ten I will take off and land by hand. I fly a DJI Flip and Mavic 3 Pro.

Perhaps we should offer a FPV UK one?

I bought one with the pegs but then decided too much messing. I use one of them foam interlocking mats that I had already and cut it down to size.

Just stops blades of grass and dirt getting in the way and causing damage.

Hi, yes they provide a clean and obstacle free take-off and landing area which is definitely a good thing but I think the most important benefit is the drone can identify the Home Point more clearly when landing.

@Louis.fpv Sounds a great idea having a additional landing pad with FPVUK Logo on it.:+1:

A local travel agent regularly changes (and discards) the plastic advertising sheets displayed outside on an ‘A’ board. The agent was delighted to know I could recycle them when I asked if I could have one as a landing mat. They measure 42 x 59CM and I’ve taped a stainless steel washer to each corner. If there’s no wind the washers alone hold it down. If there’s a breeze I put a steel skewer/peg through each corner. RTH placed my Mini 4 Pro directly onto the tiger yesterday on a local hilltop. I may ask for one with an eagle on in future :eagle:

OH good a conversation about the landing mats.
I did try and ask this on the DJI MINI2 FB group but it seems there is no longer any active admin so I was left in limbo.

I can find several 3D print designs but tbh I CBA to spend that long printing one, I’ll get one from Amazon instead.

Are there any properties it needs to have for the drone to recognise it better?
Bright Orange seems to be popular.

What about size, will a 55cm one work OK or should I spring for the larger one?
The CYH one Westbury links looks great but they only have blue ones..

I went for the larger one and they’re blue on one side orange on the other.

Thanks for that, it’s in my basket now.

Do drones use some optical sensing to see them and thus land on them better? Or is it just the GPS location they go off?

I went for one off Ebay, 7.99 and it’s huge, folds up nice into a bag and blue and orange. Thank you for all the advice..

Mine arrived today, it’s massive…
Off to have a play in the park. (better watch out for the council drone police lol).

I went for the larger size as there’s less chance of dust getting kicked up into motors etc but also allows a bit a future proofing. It’s not so large on my Air 3S…

I just used the large one, works very well.
Lands on it well, easily seen from the drone, folds up & away well.

Just need to ensure the pegs are inserted inwards at a steep angle and as low as possible else the blades can hit them.

Next on my list is a new battery so I can go for a longer spin.
