Anyone got a DJI NEO? What's it like?

I’d love to hear what you think to the new DJI NEO drone.

It looks great! How does it perform?

What do you like? What don’t you like?

Hi Simon here are my thoughts on the Neo
for me its a DJI taster drone ,by that i mean it is an introduction into the hobby
firstly it can just be flown using the fully autonomous features
then using a phone it introduces the Fly app and allows the Neo to be flown using Virtual joysticks and settings changes to how the drone responds
it also has voice control
then couple it with an apropriate RC and it flies just like any DJI drone and is a good way to learn manual control using the RC but it has limited performance with regards to its abilities to fly in windy weather and should only be used within a 500ft radious of the home point ,not because of signal loss but of VLOS and its ability to RTH
then if coupled with the goggles 3 and the handheld joystick or controller it gives an introduction into FPV flying, full accro not really ,under powered ,but its ok for learning on and it is priced as an intrduction into the hobby
will it replace my other DJI drones such as the Mini 4 pro No ,did i need one ,No, is it fun to fly Yes ,it follows me brilliantly as i ride around on my mobility scooter ,the main thing to remember is dont compare it to bigger brothers

Got one the other day just to play with flying FPV into unusual places such as around the garden between the flower beds.
At the gliding club we have the winch truck, abandoned trailer, club house and woods, that is if I actually get out long enough to fly it, so early days to say what I think of it…

I’ve got 2 batteries on back order with Drone Safe Store one delivered I can hopefully not start crashing it…

I started on the mini3oro, updated to the 4pro (for obstacle avoidance) waited for the avata 2 (knew they’d improve it over the 1st)
Then I got the neo and loved it the most, now not in the least concerned about putting it in the air, it’s just so versatile, convenient, pocket sized
Would love 360 photos but that might come.

Hi, Just one question…how do you manage to get your scooter up to 120 Mtr’s when your drone is following you ???/ Lol

hi Rob I couldn’t possibly tell you how its done ,in case the CAA find out, and want to see it in action , :zipper_mouth_face: :zipper_mouth_face: :zipper_mouth_face: :zipper_mouth_face: :zipper_mouth_face:

Lol…Just how old is old to you ???

I flew mine this weekend with goggles and motion 3 it is a wolf in sheeps clothing  once you fly it at 20cm with the goggles in sport mode it makes a great park flyer for fpv as it is only 135g. If you want to get into fpv it is a great tool to practice with. Even at full chat it has such little interia that i would happily stand in front of one. A word of caution though the wind tolerance is minimal so only do it on very liw wind days. For the money it is a great tool to learn controller fpv as well as when it crashes, and it will, it really wont damage itself easily. Unfortunately it does not work with goggles 2 or integra but i think that might change in the future with firmware updates.

Hi Simon,
Had mine a couple of weeks and out of all my drones (Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, Mini 4 Pro, Avatar 1, Air 2s) I have to say I am enjoying flying it a lot. Sure it’s not up to the level of the others but it has some great features for the price and you can take it literally anywhere and get really good results from this mighty little machine.

I bought a Mini 4 Pro first, and loved it so much that I decided to follow up with the Neo, which I intend to keep in the car more frequently - the best camera is the one you have with you.

I already tried a couple of things with the Neo that I wouldn’t try with the Mini 4 Pro, one of which was flying it through my car! The Neo is a) much smaller, and b) more protected.

The fact that you can fly it without any controller, using your phone or using a controller gives the most flexibility, depending on the moment.

A side bonus: I also bought the DJI Mic Mini last week, and was able to connect it to my phone or the controller, and then record narrative while the drone was flying in front of me. For such a low price both the Neo and Mic Mini together will allow so many people to publish really slick content.

Cool. I’m going to order one - with the DJI Mic Mini!

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone!

@martinbailey Did you get the receiver with the Mic Mini or just the mic itself? I wonder if the quality is noticeably better with the receiver (attached to your phone), or if just pairing it to your phone via Bluetooth is perfectly good?

I got the £79 package, which includes the receive. The reason I did that is that I know you can attach it to the USB-C port of the Iphone or the DJI controllers (I have the N3 that came with the Neo and the RC 2 from the Mini 4 Pro).

I haven’t done an extensive test, but the big benefit of the receive is the range - someothing like 400 feet, I believe - more than the larger Mic 2. Bluetooth should be 100 feet, but can often be much shorter - I’ve lost bluetooth connection to headphones simply by leaning forward with my phone in my trouser pocket, thus blocking the signal with my body. (That doesn’t say much for my waistline if it can block a Bluetooth signal!).

I can’t say that I noticed any different in quality, but again haven’t really done much testing other than making sure that everything actually works.

There is one (minor, I think) drawback with the Mic Mini and iPhone - the standard camera app will not use it. You need to use either the DJI Fly or Mimo app, or third party apps that support Bluetooth microphones. I contacted both DJI and Apple over this. DJI blamed iOS restrictions, and Apple didn’t really seem to have a solution, other than ‘oh, it works in their apps, so you have a solution’… This is more a limitation of iOS than an issue with the Mic Mini, though. I have a gimbal from a Chinese manufacturer, and their app supported Bluetooth mics. I must confess that I am considering going for a OSMO Pocket 3 in the future, as the instant connectivity is attractive, rather than having to connect to Bluetooth and open a specific app, which i then need to configure to use an external mic as it doesn’t remember the previous setting…

Hope that helps.

Thanks Martin.

I was thinking the same thing about an Osmo Pocket 3. It does look like a very neat solution.

It has been out a while now (released 25th October 2023), so I wonder if a new one is imminent.

I read about the iOS and camera app limitation. I’m an Android user so I think I’m OK on that front.

For the extra £30 I guess I’ll get the receiver too.

Thanks again!
