Any interest in a free live drone video editing tutorial session?

Hey folks!

I keep seeing posts asking about video editing software, and it makes me kinda sad that folks here are paying monthly subscriptions for editing software, when there are great alternatives out there that don’t require payment of a monthly tithe.

I’ve been using Davinci Resolve for several years, and I make money out of it which I guess makes me a (semi?-)professional. It’s a very powerful piece of commercial software, with a lot of features (and hence a fair amount of complexity) but Blackmagic do offer a free version, and most of the complexity isn’t really necessary for most folks who just want to cut together some drone footage.

So I’m wondering, if I were to do a live session (or sessions), completely free, where I run through some basic editing techniques using Resolve, would there be any interest? We could jump on a Google Meet, I’d give a basic explainer of how the software works, and then show a simple process I use almost every day to cut together drone footage and deliver a finished video at the end. Live session(s), nice and simple, screen-share of the editing process and interactive Q&A. Plus we’d record for those who couldn’t make it.

Reply if you’d be interested in that, if enough folks are interested I’ll set something up.

(And FWIW I’m not affiliated with Blackmagic Design in any way, I’m just a guy who knows how to use the software and would be happy to help others use it too, because I think it’s the best non-linear editor in the business  ).

Sounds fantastic!

Thanks for the offer Ross.

I’m hoping quite a few people will be interested in that.

That sounds like a good idea and very kind of you to offer Ross. I’m sure lots of people would benefit from that as the software seems very complicated.

Given what I’ve explained in my other reply to you Ross, I’d be a mug not to put my hand up for this. I’ve rage-deleted Resolve on a couple of occasions already. Lol. I’d love to stop paying my Capcut subscription and move over to Resolve permanently, if there’s help on offer I’d be super appreciative of it. Thank you.

That sounds like a great idea to me, and one I would love to participate in.

Awesome, sounds like there’s enough interest that it’d be worthwhile :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ll set something up over the next couple of weeks and we’ll do a run through :slightly_smiling_face:

Just to get a feel, would a weekday evening or a weekend work better for folks?

Great news Ross. :raising_hands:t3:
Personally, I’ve more chance of being around on a weekend as I’m probably working evenings for the next month or two…or longer.
I re-downloaded Resolve the other day, ready to have another little look.

Also, you mentioned Google Meet? Is that your preferred way of doing it? I’ll just have to set up my camera/mic with it if that’s the case.

Cheers :+1:t3:

Sounds like a great idea and for people new to the drone world it would be good to pick up a few tips and to learn how to put together a great short video of my flying

I’m very new to this too, had my first (working) drone for three months and would love some pointers in editing the footage.

Awesome, I’m in, maybe some focus on colour grading your DLog footage in DR please

Awesome, looks like it’ll be a good session

I’m a bit pushed for time this weekend, so let’s say we’ll do it next weekend - if everyone could vote for their preferred times (multiple votes are encouraged), then I’ll set up a meet and send out invites for folks. We’ll also record the session for folks who can’t make it.

For this first session we’ll have one hour, and I don’t want to overwhelm with information, so we’ll focus on the very basics of getting started and cutting together some footage and delivering a video. If it goes well and people are interested, I’ll do further sessions in the future focusing on more specific topics like colour grading, audio, motion graphics etc.

As well as voting for a time, if folks who want to attend could send me their email addresses so I can invite you to the Google Meet I’ll set up, that’d be awesome. My email is roscopeco@gmail.com - so that’s where you’ll get an invite from.

Looking forward to this folks, it’s gonna be fun

When do we have the session?

  • Sat 18th April @ 10am
  • Sat 18th April @ 4pm
  • Sun 19th April @ 3pm
0 voters

(Also, for those in the thread for whom this is their first time posting, welcome to the community! ).

Color grading is a deep topic, given we’ll only have an hour and this first session is aimed at getting folks started with a simple editing process, I’m going to skip over grading on this one - but I’m happy to do a follow-up deep-dive into grading drone footage if this one goes well

Hello,

I’ve voted but may not make it so it would be great to see the recording.

Of course, fully understood, maybe even something simple as how do I add a LUT in DR would be great. I don’t use DLog M as I’m really not sure how to “transform” it in DR to get it coloured properly. But totally understand this topic alone is its own 10 hour course  Still very happy to get any editing tips.

Hey folks, to update on this, looks like most of the votes were for the Saturday morning session, so we’ll do that!

I’ve had a family thing come up this Saturday though, so I’ll set it up for Saturday 25th April at 10am. For those who’ve emailed me, I’ll include you in the meet invite so you should get email, and I’ll post joining details in a follow-up message here too.

Looking forward to this, it’s gonna be a fun one
