Hello everyone, newbie here in Cumbria. Just got my first drone, a DJI Mini 5 Pro. Very windy here at the moment so not flown it yet but looking forward to my first flights! Looking forward to communicating with group and getting some tips around flying and photography!

This will tell you where you are permitted to fly and also where you are not permitted to fly your drone. Again welcome to the hobby and i hope the wind eases for you for your first flight

@KeithC Welcome to the group and congratulations on the new DJI Mini 5 Pro! Great choice for a first drone. Don’t worry about the wind—waiting for calmer conditions for your first flights is definitely the right call. Take your time, get comfortable with the controls, and make use of the beginner modes and safety features.
Looking forward to seeing some of your photos and videos from around Cumbria. Plenty of experienced pilots here who are always happy to help with flying tips, camera settings, and editing advice. Happy flying!

Hi Keith, I’m from Carlisle also. Have a mini 4 pro, but not flown it yet due to family / work commitments.

Still learning at the moment but enjoying it. I’ve flown the mini 4 too on a couple of occasions and they are both awesome drones! I’ve had one real scare with the mini 5 when flying at Port Carlisle on Tuesday evening when the drone was mobbed by a flock of Oyster Catchers! One of them actually hit the drone while it was over the water and the gimbal went crazy and I lost any meaningful video. I was lucky, I put the drone into sport mode and just took it up as fast as I code and then hit RTH and that worked exactly as it should thankfully and there was no damage done!!

To upload videos you need a YouTube or Vimeo account and post a link to that ( no direct upload videos allowed to the forum). I have have a YouTube account but haven’t mastered the upload thing yet! I’ll try to sort that this week and post the videos I have! My bad but, when I reviewed the video you could see the birds mobbing the drone but, I was so focussed on flying it I didn’t see what was happening! A lessoned learned:grimacing:
I’ve seen a video on youtube where they’ve put strips of reflective tape, similar to the reflective tape on the back of ambulances/police vans. They seem to think that the highly reflective material puts off birds attacking the drones and what little is applied, is negligible weight-wise.
Food for thought maybe?

@KeithC, you were very lucky there, over water as well. Thanks for posting the video; it’s a lesson for all of us. I use red reflective tape on mine and they tend to stay away, but I’m always careful when birds are present.
Definitely lucky there Keith, like the other poster says, with it being over water. What did the bird do when it hit, looks like the camera was knocked out of alignment, but you seemed to easily fix it?

All I did was switch to msport mode and climb as fast as I could then hit RTH and the drone did the rest! Once I git it back I just powered it off and when I powered it back on everything reset as it should be! Got a warning from the drone that it had detected a collision and to check the props. After checking and acknowledging the message, everything was fine!
Quick thinking there climbing then RTH very lucky indeed but I am glad it all worked out for you and let’s face it a cool video to add to the collection to remember the flight
