New member- Andrea from London

Hi, been flying for about a year now, the first drone I purchased was a DJI mini 3. Really enjoyed flying & learnt alot. Recently see. FPV drones and this is something I want to get into, have downloaded a simulator to get some practice on before I bite the bullet and get another drone. Are there any fly clubs in North London?

Welcome to the forum, helpful and friendly crew here !

Have a couple of regular drones but just started down the FPV rabbit hole as well.

Currently not left the sim yet… which one are you using and which controller etc ?

Hi Westbury,

I’ve started using Liftoff (you have to pay for it and download it through Steam), but it’s very good learning curve. I’m using the radiometer pocket at the moment, which can seem a lot at first but once you get around that it’s really fun to use.

Heard good things about Liftoff, not tried it yet. Am currently using FPVSkydive which is free on steam for a basic version with 1 drone and a couple of zones. Have bought some of the DLC’s to give me more drones / areas.

Using a DJI FPV contoller 3 with the sim. Ultimatly plan to go fully digital with a Pavo20 Pro 04 and DJI 04 Pro air unit.

Drones winging it’s way to me from Hong Kong as a type !

Hi Andrea,
Welcome to the group.
Great to hear you’re looking to try FPV. I started this year and now I can’t stop!
There are several flying clubs in nth London, but they tend to be for fixed-wing enthusiasts and it looks like they stack the rules against quadcopters, requiring either a membership period of up to two years and / or an internal qualification before you can fly one solo. I guess the two hobbies don’t mesh well. No FPV clubs as far as I know.
Because FPVs require spotters, the best thing might be to find a friend who also wants to learn, research a safe and legal place to fly and take it in turns to spot for each other.
To be honest I joined this forum thinking it would have a spotter-matching feature, but I think despite the name most people here fly cine drones so there’s no real call for it.

Hi,
Thanks, it’s been great so far. Yeah hoping to catch the bug, looks like a lot of pun and some amazing shots too. Thanks for the advice, it’s a shame really. Yeah that seems like the only choice. That would be a cool feature to be honest :+1:

Liftoff was a great starting point for me. That and a tiny whoop I destroyed many times over!

Welcome, I’m new too and I have a DJI mini3. Lots of awesome members on here with some top tips and good things to share. I haven’t been on my first flight yet but I need to go out and do it lol. You mentioned something about a simulator, any good?

Hi,
Yeah enjoyed my DJI mini 3 was good fun. Yeah it’s a good community and lots of good things being shared. Ha, I’m holding off actually getting the drone because I know I’ll want to take it out straight away, good luck for when you get out. I use Liftoff which I enjoy using and hope it’s helping my flying. There a YouTuber called Brodie Reed who has a downloadable guide to your first FPV drone and has some practice things to try so doing them to help when I eventually get out.

Simulators are more for FPV fliers to practice as FPV drones are flown totally manually and much harder to fly than the typical DJI camera drone. So it pays to have some simulator time before flying FPV,

Ah makes sense…another thing I’ve learned today

I actually think camera drone flyers would benefit from some flying lessons and sim practice. It took my flying and confidence up a notch. While camera drones do everything for you, learning the different types of turns is arguably worthwhile. I’d probably use a free sim for that as accurate physics won’t reflect flying with an automated DJI.

I agree. The FPV UK CofC Practical gives you some basic manoeuvres, which I think are useful.

You can see me do them on video on this page: FPV UK 'Certificate of Competency: Practical' - FPV UK

Fairly basic stuff, but good to have under your belt (and fun!)
