I forgot about that!
And I think other maps are paywalled now.
Possibly they also used data from AA.
Interesting story - I will have to do a deep dive into it soon.
The app is still working for now and for my needs it will be enough. As long as it continues through the restructuring, but I don’t even think we know that at this stage.
A new owner and a government-funded alternative are both viable options. Potentially a subscription-based app might emerge.
I’m sure the administrators will ask how so many apps around the world can use its data for free when it ran out of cash. (I’m assuming they didn’t meet the goal of this year’s funding round).
I’ve just landed a nice place — no pun intended — to fly in Ilfracombe, North Devon. The farm has eight or nine very large fields with about a mile-long drive to reach it. They also have a motocross track, which makes for some great filming opportunities.
There are woodlands and streams to fly around and along, plus livestock on site — perfect for search-and-rescue practice at night.
I have full use of the site and was thinking about setting up a small members group to meet up and fly. There are spots where you can pitch a tent or park a camper for an overnight stay, so you can even fly at night if you’ve got a thermal drone like me.
There are no neighbours within a mile, and you can access all the fields through connecting tracks — so if your drone goes down, there’s no worry about losing it on land you can’t reach. An e-bike would come in handy too, as the land stretches for miles.
To help with upkeep and access, there will be a small fee — £5 a day to fly and £5 if you want to stay overnight.
I’m also a 1/10 scale model crawler fan and have started creating a small track to play on. So, if you’re into crawlers too — or fancy filming models with your drone — that might be another fun option while you’re there.
This won’t be starting until the new year, by which time I’ll have spoken with the surrounding farms and landowners to get permission for access to their land as well.
Attendance will be by invitation and appointment only, as I want to keep things relaxed and well-organised.
This is just an idea for now, as I don’t want to rock the boat for myself, so I’ll only be inviting a selected few.
That sounds amazing.
I would be well up for a few days of camping and flying in Devon, and can even assemble a Lego Mindstorms crawler over Christmas if it helps to fit in
Happy to pair up with another person for compliant FPV flying.
It would be great if there were more land owners open to this kind of arrangement.
Cheers! Glad you like the sound of it — it really is a great spot. A Lego Mindstorms crawler sounds brilliant, that would definitely fit right in!
I’ve got a Landy 4x4 TRX-4 Land Rover Defender myself, so there’ll be plenty of crawling fun alongside the flying. Pairing up for compliant FPV flying sounds like a solid plan too.
Just to add — the site will be for FPV UK members only, with the appropriate licences or flying under the FPV UK Article 16 Authorisation.
For anyone curious, my own setup includes an Autel Evo 2 Dual 640T V3 Thermal, DJI Air 2, and DJI Avata 2, so the farm is well-suited for everything from standard to FPV and thermal night flying.
Makes sense.
I love your Autel Thermal. I had no idea there was an off-the-shelf thermal available. What does it get used for? Looks like it would make a great mine sweeper!
I’ve had it for over a year now but haven’t had much chance to fly it, mostly due to the same location issues you mentioned. I’ve used it for some property inspections to check heat loss, and once during a bush fire in Newquay — the fire brigade had nothing to gauge the ground heat, so I used mine for that. They were really grateful since they usually have to use a tethered system.
I also use the light on it when walking the dogs at night — there are no lights around — and it even helps me see their poo better with the thermal, haha. It’s great for mapping too, and it can carry quite a bit of weight. So droping a ball far away if fun for them. haha
My first thought was that you use it for dog search and rescue. Well, I wasn’t that far off
My poor furball hates the sound of drones, so it’s been a challenge getting her to relax around them so she can come flying. But TOAL at least 15m away means she’s totally relaxed and gets to enjoy more outings.
My eldest Collie loves the Air 2 drone, and as soon as it’s up, he’s running with me, chasing him. He does not bother with the others, only the DJI. The youngest Collie is not interested. Anyway I will contact you in the new year with a better idea if ok.
